수라갯벌에 사는 식물 Plants of Sura
2024년 5월 12일, 수라갯벌 중심부의 습지대에서 발견한 양뿔사초 군락에 대한 새만금신공항 백지화공동행동의 보도자료입니다. 양뿔사초는 산림청이 지정한 희귀식물로서, 국가적색목록 위급(CR:야생에서 극단적으로 높은 절멸위기에 직면한 상태)으로 평분류된 멸종위기종으로 국가보호식물입니다. 전국에 흔하게 분포하고 있지 않고, 정보가 부족한 식물입니다. 특이하게도 남부지역인 전북의 수라갯벌에서 양뿔사초 군락이 발견된 것인데요. 북부(강원도 철원, 횡성)를 제외한 남부지역에 양뿔사초가 발견된 것은 2015년 군산 백석제 습지 이후 이번 수라갯벌 습지가 두 번째입니다. 이번 양뿔사초 군락의 발견은 전북이 남방계와 북방계 식물이 공존하는 곳임을 보여주는 것으로 수라갯벌이 습지로서 매우 중요한 생태적/학술적 가치를 지니고 있음을 보여줍니다. 수라갯벌은 변화된 환경에 따라 갯벌과 육지로 이어지는 배후습지로서 조류, 저서생물, 양서파충류, 곤충, 포유류, 염생식물 등의 다양한 생물들이 살아가는 소중한 공간입니다. 수라갯벌을 공항이 아니라 갯벌과 습지로 보존해야할 또 하나의 중요한 이유입니다. 북방계 식물인 양뿔사초가 어떻게 남부지역인 수라갯벌에서 군락을 형성하여 자생할 수 있었는지에 대한 국가차원의 보다 정밀한 조사 및 연구, 보호조치가 필요합니다.
This is a press release from the Joint Action to Cancel the Saemangeum New Airport Project regarding the discovery of a colony of yangppul sedge (Carex species) in the wetland area at the center of the Sura tidal flat on May 12, 2024. Yangppul sedge is a rare plant designated by the Korea Forest Service. It is classified as Critically Endangered (CR: facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild) on the National Red List, making it a nationally protected species. It is neither widely distributed across the country nor well studied, with limited information available about it. Remarkably, this colony of yangppul sedge was found in the Sura tidal flat in Jeonbuk Province, a southern region of Korea. Outside of northern areas such as Cheorwon and Hoengseong in Gangwon Province, this is only the second time the plant has been recorded in a southern region since its discovery at the Baekseokje wetland in Gunsan in 2015. The discovery of this colony shows that Jeonbuk is a place where both southern and northern flora coexist, underscoring the significant ecological and scientific value of the Sura tidal flat as a wetland. The Sura tidal flat is a valuable space where various species — including birds, benthic organisms, amphibians and reptiles, insects, mammals, and halophytes — thrive in a backshore wetland environment that transitions from tidal flats to land depending on environmental changes. This is yet another important reason why the Sura tidal flat should be preserved as a tidal flat and wetland, not developed into an airport. A more detailed nationwide investigation, research, and protective measures are needed to understand how this northern plant species, yangppul sedge, was able to form a colony and naturally grow in a southern area like the Sura tidal flat.
